History Reflections -
Dr. G.V. Black in his textbook written in 1915 discussed his observations of finding "cavities" in
the jawbone. He felt that these were infected areas or areas of osteonecrotic or dead bone. He recommended surgically curetting these lesions until normal texture of bone and bleeding was found and then closing over these surgical areas to heal.
Dr Rater in the 1950's wrote that these jawbone pathologies were difficult to locate and some were not visible to conventional radiographs. We know that up to 40% of the jawbone needs to be involved before a radiographic image differs enough from normal bone to be discerned.
Mr. Bob Jones, aviator, engineer, and jawbone pathology patient, has invented a device to help in the diagnosis of these lesions. He applied for and received unconditional FDA approval for his device called a Cavitat™ . It is a "thru transmission ultrasonography" device similar to the sonogram used to determine a babies sex in utero. Michael R. Jackson DDS, FIAOMT (fellow of the Internal Academy of Oral Medicine and Toxicology) believes that this device is a very valuable aid in the diagnosis of jawbone pathology.
