Modern, comfortable dentistry that supports
whole-body wellness.
Although our office stopped placing mercury amalgam fillings in 1993, we still remove them when they fail or when patients that have concerns about these materials in their mouths request us to do so. The International Academy of Oral Medicine and Toxicology (IAOMT) was established in the early 1980's for the purpose of determining if these materials are conducive to maintaining overall body health. This organization is composed of dentist, medical practitioners, and research scientists. The peer reviewed literature is filled with articles and papers from all over the world recommending against using this restorative material. We, therefore, believe that other filling materials are less toxic, and when compatibility testing is accomplished to determine which materials are best suited for each individual patient, provide a foundation for supporting whole-body wellness. Because we have concerns about safety of dental amalgams, we take special measures that are directed at minimizing the exposure to the patient and dental office staff from the mercury in the dental amalgams we remove. The IAOMT has suggested protocols for the removal of mercury containing fillings and our office follows these guidelines. A sample of the protocols we use are as follows.
Evaluate the health of the patient prior to removal of the amalgams.
Provide ionizers in the treatment rooms to more quickly rid the aerosols from the room air.
Use high volume suction.
Use other specialized vacuum devices when a rubber dam application is not possible.
Draping or covering exposed skill during removal.
Protective eyewear.
Outside air or oxygen air source for the patient.
Rinsing with Chlorella after removal to help rid any exposure to mercury material from the mouth.
Multiple changing of drapes and gloves during removal.
Use of copious amounts of water to minimize the mercury in the created aerosols.
Rubber dam barrier to keep mercury debris and vapor from the oral cavity as much as possible.
Cutting or chunking out the mercury amalgam in large pieces to further reduce the mercury in the aerosol.
Referrals for outside detoxifying and nutritional sources when desirable.

We believe these and other to be developed techniques should be used when any patient is undergoing removal of mercury amalgam material. Dr. Jackson has earned an Accreditation from the IAOMT for the removal of these materials.
