The fiber optic laser bundle is guided between the gum and tooth and the laser vaporizes inflamed, infected, dark colored tissue while sparing the healthy unaffected tissues. The pocket is opened by the action of the laser without reflecting a flap. Sonic instruments are used to clean hard deposits from the tooth surface, and then a second pass of the laser sterilizes the pocket. Most pathogens that cause gum disease are dark pigmented so the laser selectively vaporizes them as well. The second pass of the laser also creates biological super glue that reattaches the tissue to almost the exact same height on the tooth as before treatment. The delicate root surfaces are therefore not exposed for thermal or tactile stimulation which results in significantly less discomfort to the teeth postoperatively.
